Do Americans Need More Holidays?

What is with America’s fascination with work? Is the cause due to money, feelings of self-worth, status, ego? I can’t tell you how many times my friends exasperate how BUSY they are as if it’s a badge of honor to not have enough time to do anything including simply enjoying life. With some of the world’s highest crime rates, divorce rates, health issues, is the U.S. really better off with many of its citizens being so darn busy regularly working 50, 60, 80 + hour weeks with minimal vacation time?

Like anything else, once you can measure something, you can place value on it. In the CNN article above, Do Americans Need More Holidays?it gives the example of how Argentina’s economic growth increased since its current President increased the amount of public holidays. The article suggests this is due to increased domestic tourism. If the U.S. government gave its citizens another 5 days off, what would you do, where would you go? Do you think the U.S. economy would suffer from decreased productivity or have a more revitalized workforce leading to increased efficiency?

What are your thoughts?

Unless the change was dramatic (way more than 5 additional days off), I don’t think it would make much difference…maybe there could be more incentives to travel along with the time off…
